We are delighted to introduce you to Critical Mass artist-in-residence, Cécile Hug! Cécile Hug will be joining us for her residency in Port Hope this Spring 2021.
Cécile explores the relationship of humans to nature and nature to humans – a vital but nevertheless often undermined link that unites them – and it is at the centre of her installations, drawings, sculptures and sound pieces.
At the origin of each of Cécile Hug’s creations, there is a gathering, whether it is plant, animal or sound. To gather is to observe, to walk, to listen, to feel, to choose. Born on the shores of the Lake of Geneva, with winegrowers for parents, Cécile grew up with the rhythm of nature. As a child, she took part in the harvest. She learned very early how to handle pruning shears. To observe before choosing the right cut. Cécile’s work allows her to prolong this transmitted gesture. Archaic gesture that nevertheless questions the future. With the fragility of our ecosystem, Cécile questions what will be the gatherings of tomorrow?
This weekend, Cécile invites the Port Hope community – children, teenagers, seniors, parents, beginners and experienced artists, to gather. No, we're not talking about a social gathering, but to get outside and immerse yourself in nature. She invites you to select and gather some of the diversity of Port Hope's vegetation, which will become part of a large herbarium and showcased in an exhibit at the Little Station.
Cécile video walks you through her practice of gathering and gives you tips on how to select items for your herbarium, and shows you what materials you will need.
This weekend, we gather. Next weekend, on Saturday, October 10th, we make our Herbariums, plus an additional workshop will be announced soon to make a wax dipped plant house which would make a perfect centrepiece for Thanksgiving!
